It Hao Pheh
'A Walk to Remember'
This painting was done about a year ago; it has since captivated much attention and has also won several awards. I've always considered myself as an impressionist. I like capturing scenes of everyday life, such as buildings which seem memorable and familiar to us, yet we pass it by each day paying very little attention to it. In my work one could recognise my use of visible dry brush strokes, a sense of movement and spontaneity, emphasis of light capturing different moods or weather and finally my unusual visual angles capturing a moment in time. What I enjoyed working on this painting is capturing the livelihood of Melbourne city life, the significant view from the Princes bridge overlooking the backdrop of high-rise buildings, which doesn't look intimidating but rather possesses a quiet serene view almost blending with the rest of the atmosphere. The mood of a cold day seems to have made the effect of blending in the scene even more obvious. I'm very thankful that this painting has received the outcome of what I have intended to create and the comments from all the judges have seemed to share the same view of this intention.

'It Hao has established himself as a major watercolour artist over a range of different subject matter and discipline. This painting demonstrates It Hao's masterful drafting skills, expert control and mastery tone. He captures the mood of light in dramatic contrast in the main focal point to dark shadows with sprinkles of highlights. Well done and well deserved!' Jefferey Murphy

"This painting is a tour de force of good observation, tonal control, atmosphere and the artists use of mark making. Using his signature style of marks, splattering over washes give the viewer the true impression of the busyness of the city and city life with plenty to look and explore. A worthy winner.'
